Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina
I have been visiting Hunting Island for the last 40 years, sometimes alone, sometimes with friends and even on my honeymoon. It is a magical, spiritual, beautiful place filled with life and the sounds and smells of the marshes, lagoons and ocean. My advice - go off season if at all possible.
Note: When we visited Hunting Island State Park in November, 2009, we were shocked at the toll that erosion has taken. Many of the cabins have had to be moved and the lagoon cabins are now only accessible by golf-cart. A few private homes have been washed away as well.
